Opinion Poll 2008

Once a year the "Your voice against poverty" campaign conducts a comprehensive public opinion poll (together with TNS Infratest GmbH) to assess the German public's knowledge and attitudes towards the MDGs and poverty. In a series of multiple choice questions, a sample of 1,000 were surveyed on their knowledge of the MDGs, the level of their commitment and which actions they would take to tackle poverty, to name but a few. The results provide the campaign with invaluable information on their target groups, their habits and attitudes. Here are some of the key outcomes of this year’s poll from October 2008

Your voice against poverty

Please join with campaigners across the globe and send ‘your voice against poverty’ to the German Government. This e-postcard will remind Chancellor Merkel and her fellow leaders of the promises they have made and the need for them to do more in the fight against poverty.

In 2000 the German Government along with 189 other countries signed up to the Millennium Declaration of the United Nations, committing to implement the Millennium Development Goals. In 2007, Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "Our credibility is dependent upon whether we meet our international obligations."

We want to be credible! In our name: We want you to stand by your commitments and finally turn the promises for more and better aid, debt relief for poor countries and trade justice into concrete action. (Actively) encourage good governance practices in developing countries. The private sector and other actors need to contribute to fight against poverty and injustice too.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Germany and across the world have already raised their voices - not enough has been done yet. Don´t play for time, be courageous, and seize the change to make history. I give you my voice. Now it is your turn to follow up your words with actions.
